What Is A Matcha Latte?

Before we tell you our ultimate matcha latte recipe, you must first understand what it is.

Matcha is a Japanese word which means “ground tea”. It is and has been a very popular drink in East Asia for centuries, before now finally being renowned throughout the globe.

Some people think that matcha lattes are made up of coffee and green tea. However, there is actually no coffee in it! The espresso used in a cafe latte is replaced with green tea powder.

Different Kinds Of Matcha Latte

As we just mentioned, matcha is green tea that has been ground to powder form. There are 3 main types of matcha:

  • Ceremonial Matcha: this is the highest quality matcha available and is often used during ceremonies or important events in East Asia. It is considered premium grade matcha, and has a very bright green colour as well as a silky texture.
  • Latte Matcha: this is considered medium grade matcha, and as its name suggests it is often used for making drinks like the matcha latte. It is a little bit less bright green than ceremonial matcha, and tastes a bit more bitter.
  • Cooking Matcha: this is considered the lowest grade due to its bitter taste and greenish brown colour. It is used for cooking dishes.

Out of the 3, Ceremonial Matcha is the best for making tasty matcha lattes and creates an attractive bright green drink. However, it tends to be quite expensive, so you can also use the Latte Matcha to make your beverage. Just make sure to avoid Cooking Matcha!

Matcha Latte Recipe: Step By Step Guide

Ingredients you need to prepare include:

  • ¾ tsp of ceremonial or latte grade matcha green tea powder
  • ½ tbsp of sweetener (honey or maple syrup)
  • ½ cup of steamed / frothed milk
  • ¼ cup of cool water
  • ¼ cup of hot water

Steps to make matcha latte at home:

  1. Pour your matcha powder into a small bowl
  2. Add half of your cool water and mix them with a whisk to form a paste
  3. Add the remaining cool water and continue to whisk vigorously for 20 – 30 seconds until a thick foam appears on top
  4. Pour your sweetener into a drinking mug and add hot water
  5. Next, add the foamy matcha paste into the mug and stir
  6. Steam your milk using an espresso machine or froth it using a French Press, milk frother, or whisk
  7. Add the frothed or steamed milk into the mug and serve!

Tip: You can add ice while reducing the amount of water used to create an iced matcha latte.

Which Milk Should I Use to Make Matcha Latte Recipe?

There are several types of milk available in the market. You are free to use whichever one you want, but follow our following recommendations for the best flavour and texture:

  • If you are fine with dairy milk, then we suggest you go for whole milk. It is hands down the best milk overall for steaming and frothing, which will result in a velvety latte.
  • If you are vegan and want to go non – dairy, then we recommend you choose oat milk. It’s the best out of all non – dairy milk for frothing and steaming.
