What Is Dalgona Coffee?

Before learning how to make Dalgona Coffee, you should first understand what it is.

Dalgona Coffee is actually quite similar to other whipped coffee beverages like the Indian Cappuccino or the Frappe. It involves whisking coffee, sugar, and hot water before pouring the mixture over ice and milk.

The word “dalgona” itself comes from a classic Korean street snack, also called honeycomb toffee. Since the flavour of the coffee drink is similar to this street snack, the name Dalgona Coffee was created.

Required Ingredients & Equipment

  • 1 cup of fresh milk
  • 1 tbsp of sugar
  • 1 tbsp of hot water
  • 1 tbsp of instant coffee powder
  • Ice cubes (only if you want a cold drink)
  • Medium-sized mixing bowl
  • A milk frother / stand mixer

Steps To Make Delicious Dalgona Coffee

Making Dalgona Coffee is very easy and quick to do, as it takes less than 10 minutes from start to finish. Here are the steps for creating a delicious glass of Dalgona Coffee:

  • Start by pouring and mixing your instant coffee, sugar, and hot water in the mixing bowl
  • Use your mixer and whisk the mixture at high speed for around 2 to 4 minute
  • Stop once the mixture becomes thick and smooth
  • Place your ice cubes in a glass or mug, and then pour in fresh milk
  • Use a spoon to scoop the whipped coffee on top of the milk and ice cubes, then serve

How To Properly Store Dalgona Coffee

Storing Dalgona Coffee is pretty easy. If you made too much whipped coffee, you can place them in an airtight container (without the milk) and put it in the fridge. Your mixture will eventually dissolve, but it should be able to last a few days if stored properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What If I Don’t Have A Hand Mixer?

No worries! Whisking by hand works as well, but it will take somewhere between 10-15 minutes instead of the 2-4 minutes achieved by using a mixer. Also make sure to whisk it in a zig – zag pattern instead of large circles for better texture.

Why Should I Use Instant Coffee?

Instant coffee tends to create the best Dalgona texture, which is smooth and velvety. You can also use fresh coffee grounds, but the consistency will not be as silky.

What Sugar Should I Use?

You can use any granulated sugar such as brown sugar, white sugar, and even coconut sugar! It is also possible to make this drink without using sugar. However, the whipped coffee will only stay fluffy for a couple of minutes before dissolving back to liquid form in less than 10 minutes. Using sugar will allow your whipped coffee to stay fluffy for hours.
