What Is Iced Chocolate?
If you look on the internet, there are tons of iced chocolate variations and recipes, so it is a little difficult to properly define what is an iced chocolate. To put it simply, iced chocolate is a cold chocolate flavoured drink which usually also contains milk and other sweeteners. It is rich, velvety, refreshing, and downright delicious.
When Is The Best Time To Drink Iced Chocolate?
You can enjoy iced chocolate anytime and anywhere. It is especially great for drinking on sunny days. People who live in hot – climate countries, such as Singapore, will find iced chocolate as the perfect cold and sweet drink to refresh the body and provide a little extra boost.
Iced Chocolate Ingredients
For our iced chocolate recipe, you will need to prepare 5 main ingredients beforehand:
Milk
Milk will serve as the base of this beverage. We recommend you use full cream milk as this helps create a better texture for your drink. However, you can also use plant – based milk alternatives such as soy milk, oat milk, cashew milk, or almond milk. Using a plant – based milk is a great option if you are vegan or have issues with digesting dairy.
Cocoa or Cacao Powder
A lot of people confuse cocoa and cacao powder as the same thing, despite them having some key differences. Cacao powder is a pure powder made from unfermented roasted beans, has a more ‘authentic’ chocolate flavour, and does not contain additional ingredients. On the other hand, cocoa powder is manufactured using much higher temperatures, often has additives such as sugar, and tastes sweeter. Keep in mind these differences when choosing your powder.
Ice Cubes
You can’t make a cold beverage without ice cubes! They are essential for ensuring a nice and chilly drink. However, make sure you do not add too many ice cubes or your drink will end up diluted, watery, and bland.
Sweetener
The cocoa / cacao powder you use may be a bit bitter, so it is always a wise idea to add a bit of sweetener to balance the flavour. Some popular choices for sweeteners include maple syrup, simple syrup, coconut sugar, etc.
Hot Water
Before making the drink cold, you will first need to mix the powder, milk, and sweetener. This is why you need hot water; to make sure your mixture blends well and does not have ‘clumps’ in them.
Optional Additives
Some people like to add other optional ingredients to spice up their iced chocolate. Some popular iced chocolate additives include cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom, salt, and tahini. You can add these ingredients to the hot water mixture. Once the drink is served, you can also add ice cream or whipped cream on top as toppings.
